South Jersey Black History Month events

Black History Month (BHM) is a yearly celebration held every February to recognize the historic contributions of African Americans to U.S history, culture, and society. From science and politics to art and community leadership. This month is a time to honor Black leaders and stories often underrepresented in American narratives. For residents and/or visitors of Southern New Jersey, the month brings a rich lineup of events that highlight local heritage and community pride across the region. Read on for ways to engage with Black History Month events happening throughout the eight counties of South Jersey and be sure to explore these gatherings and programs with your family and friends while it lasts.  


Atlantic


African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey 2026 Quilt Exhibit

January 11th - March 28th

11 AM - 5 AM

African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey (AAHMSNJ) 2026 Quilt Exhibit shows the works of several accomplished quilt & textile artists on display for black history and women's history months. This exhibit includes artists: Carla Cornick, Gloria Gammage Davis, Joyce Hagan, Winifred Jenkins, Dressler Smith, and Doreen Mollette Sullivan. Open every Tuesday - Sunday.


Burlington

Black History Month Small Business Marketplace

from 9 am to 2 pm

Celebrate Black excellence, culture, and community at this Black History Month Small Business Marketplace. A vibrant shopping experience featuring locally owned Black businesses, creatives, and entrepreneurs. Discover unique products, enjoy a welcoming atmosphere, and support Black owned businesses while honoring the rich legacy and future of Black innovation.


A Celebration of Local Iconic Heroes/Sheroes

Friday, February 20th

From 5 PM - 9 PM

A fun filled evening as The Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County

honors the creative trailblazers whose artistic contributions have shaped communities and inspired generations. From oratorical skillsets, visual artists and musicians to theatre and performers, see the brilliance and resilience of Burlington local legends.


Black History Month Read-In with Tabernacle Baptist Church

Saturday, February 21st

From 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Come join Tabernacle Baptist Church as they honor African American authors, bring awareness to illiteracy, and celebrate our heritage and future. Read a quote from your favorite author, recite an original or favorite poem or spoken word, sing or play a song of old or new, or inspire in movement and dance.


Black History Pop Up Cultural Experience

From 12 PM - 3 PM

Step into a vibrant celebration of Black history and culture, where art, music, and stories come alive in a unique pop-up experience. Free event with activities, music and vendors, fun photo ops and snacks.


Camden

Dr. Carter G. Woodson BHM Photography Exhibition Invitational

Saturday, February 7th - Feb 28th

From 12 PM -  5 PM

Celebrate Black History through photography at the DR. Carter G. Woodson BHM Exhibition. This powerful exhibition centers Black stories through the lenses of contemporary photographers, celebrating history, culture, truth, memory, and resilience 


Marjorie & Lewis Katz JCC: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future Art exhibit

February 2nd - March 1st

From 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM

This exhibition aims to inspire and motivate the next generation of innovators. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists, view their work, and purchase fine art throughout Black History Month. A portion of all art sale proceeds benefits the Katz JCC.


Black History Cookie Decorating Class

Saturday, February 21st 

From 12 PM - 1:30 PM 

Glassy Brown Cookies is excited to offer a Black History themed cookie decorating class! In this 1.5-hour class, Glassy Brown Cookies and the team will teach attendees how to decorate two Black History-themed cookies with royal icing. No decorating experience is necessary!


Hand Me Down the Silver Trumpet

Sunday, February 15th

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

This show is dedicated to the history of African American recording artists who made “race records” at Victor Records in Camden, NJ in the 1920s and 30s, and features performances of classic blues, jazz, and gospel music performed by a cast of students, alumni, guest artists, and a truly swinging band.



Cape May

Black Voices of Cape May: A Feeling of Community Lecture

Black Legacy in Historic Cape May Trolley Tour

African Folktales from Around the World”

The Friends of the Cumberland County Library invite you to an enchanting evening of global storytelling with Michelle Washington Wilson, one of New Jersey’s most beloved storytellers. In African Folktales From Around the World, Michelle transports audiences on a magical journey—no passport required—as she shares classic and original tales that celebrate culture, imagination, and the universal joy of story.


The James Brown Experience

Gloucester Township Black History Month Celebration 2026

Every February, Gloucester Township Mayor and Council celebrate Black History Month by honoring outstanding African American members of the community. Nominations are now being accepted for exemplary citizens who have demonstrated significant contributions in the area of community service, personal or professional achievements, or general good deeds that have impacted favorably on Gloucester citizens.

Black History Month Celebration with Toms River Area NAACP and Dave Revels

Celebrate Black History Month with  food tasting prepared by members of the Toms River Area NAACP and a musical performance by Dave Revels.
