How "Connections that Stick!" is Redefining Creative Community

In the South Jersey arts scene, "networking" often feels overwhelming and scary. It's easy to fall into cliques and difficult to break out into larger or different networks and groups, leading to a loss in opportunity and growth.

These obstacles weighed heavily on the mind of recent Stockton University graduate, Catherine Allen, the creator of StudioCatCo. and founder of "Connections That Stick!" She found herself immersed in the South Jersey Arts scene through events linked with local and regional arts organizations, seeking opportunities and resources while connecting with numerous artists who deeply desired that essential level of connection to advance to the next stage.

After attending South Jersey Cultural Alliance's Annual Convening and experiencing how electric the connections and energy were in the space, she began to think of how artists across the Southern New Jersey region (Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties) can find connection with one another more deeply and specifically while also sharing resources.

This idea fully branched off as she discussed it with organizational leaders at South Jersey Artist Collective and South Jersey Cultural Alliance while combining her love for stickers and their effectiveness as a communication and connection tool.

What began as a simple gathering has evolved into a larger movement of unity and connection amongst artists in the region. We are thrilled to dig deeper into the origins of "Connections that Stick!" with Catherine Allen, our new Digital Communications Specialist so you can learn more and get ready for the next meet up in April.

"Connections That Stick!" Q&A

  1. How would you describe the philosophy behind "Connections that Stick!"?

It’s really where intention meets community. I wanted to move away from transactional networking and toward a space that is authentic, professional, and most importantly playful (using the fun of stickers!!). When you create an environment where creatives feel both seen and supported, they stop performing and start connecting. It’s about creating a living example of what happens when we stop working in isolation.

  1. You mention that this project has been transformative for you personally. How has it changed your perspective on collaboration?

It’s completely reinforced my belief that meaningful creative work is rarely a solo act. I’ve watched partnerships form between emerging and established artists who might never have crossed paths otherwise.

Seeing a nonprofit leader brainstorm with a young illustrator or a historic site manager find a new audience through a local musician that’s the "stickiness" we’re looking for. There is always something to learn from someone else, regardless of their career stage or discipline.

  1. How has SJCA and South Jersey Artist Collective's support fueled your mission?

SJCA doesn’t just fund initiatives; they invest in people. They’ve played a massive role in my own journey, giving me the visibility and encouragement to grow from a creative professional into an advocate. They serve artists, small businesses, and historic landmarks with a "community-first" mindset.

Recently joining the SJCA team has been incredibly fulfilling because I now get to curate new ways for the organization to thrive. When SJCA thrives, the entire South Jersey arts and history landscape thrives.

Regarding the South Jersey Artist Collective (SJAC), their support, from offering space to serving as an outstanding link for artists, is something I am immensely grateful for. They offered the venue and platform to host the event, while SJCA contributed resources and support. This is yet another example of how valuable and beneficial a good collaboration is for all parties involved!
