East Lynne Theater Company (ELTC) is a proven destination for theater lovers who crave the adventure of discovery. By bringing the American Spirit to the stage with its blend of provocative premieres and timeless classics, this award-winning Equity professional theater provides a portal to the past for a better understanding of the present. Founded in 1980, it was the first theater in the country with the unique mission of presenting and preserving America’s theatrical heritage, and is named after a popular 19th century American play. “The New York Times” listed ELTC as one of the 75 top summer theaters in North America.

ELTC takes pride in providing theater-goers, actors, and directors, alike, the experience of seeing and working on plays by American Masters like Rachel Crothers, George S. Kaufman, and Eugene O’Neill, as well as new works based on American literature and history. ELTC’s artist-in-residence programs and summer theater workshops teach students acting, playwriting, and production, focusing on American history and literature. The company’s touring shows travel throughout the country. During the Cape May Performing Season, the company is in residence at the historic First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, right in the center of town, a block away from the beach.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Program Description:

Believing that art should be accessible to students, ELTC has provided theater workshops to schools in South Jersey, at no cost to these towns or schools, continuously, since 2000, and is the only not-for-profit in South Jersey to do so. These workshops can be either process or production-oriented. ELTC seeks funding through organizations like Target and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, and individual contributions. Arrangements can be made to have classes attend special matinees of our productions, and/or we can bring a production to the school.

Program Description:

Why should young school-age students have all the fun?  Playwriting, acting, improvisation and even juggling workshops are available for adults, too!  ELTC’s professional actors have taught classes at our performance venue, Cape May Presbyterian Church, as well as brought our workshops to libraries, museums, and private homes.

At least one Friday per production, between June and October, there is a post-discussion where the audience can ask questions of the actors and the creative team. For groups, arrangements can be made for these discussions to occur at other times, if given two weeks’ notice.

We’ve also taught the following classes for Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) and other Adult Education Programs throughout the Northeast:  Acting, Playwriting, Shakespeare, American Literature, and American Theater History. Members of ELTC are also accustomed to teaching those with special needs i.e., the Blind Center of the Jersey Cape and the LEAD Program, both with members who are partially or totally blind.

TESTIMONIALS

“My two boys were part of ELTC’s in-school programs and also participated in East Lynne’s Summer Program.  We absolutely loved that experience as well.  The children get an excellent program at a modest fee compared to other camps. In fact, I prefer East Lynne’s program to others because Gayle holds the children to a higher standard of professionalism and conduct than I’ve seen elsewhere.”

“Thank you for working with the Blind Center of the Jersey Cape. The participants are very pleased with the services that you are providing to them.”

“Thank you for the information that you shared with our fifth grade students during your playwriting sessions in March. This made for unique and exciting educational experiences.  The event was new and outside their comfort zone.  Their participation was highly enriching and possessed immeasurable intrinsic value.  I was very proud to see them come out of their shell and perform for their peers, teachers, and parents.  We so appreciated your visit at Glenwood Avenue Elementary School, as well as did our students”.
