SJ Artist Conversation Guest Speaker: Tyrone "Dancing Wolf" Ellis Jr.
By Madalyn Sudol, SJCA Spring Semester Social Media Intern
We have an exciting opportunity during our SJ Artist Conversation coming up THIS March 28th, at 7pm!
As part of our ongoing SJ Artist Conversation series, Tyrone “Dancing Wolf” Ellis Jr. will be presenting a presentation about the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape tribe, and the six years they lost their tribal status under the Chris Christie administration and the impact that had on tribal artists.
The arts are an important part of Native American culture. Ty Ellis is skilled in drum making, rattle making, beadwork, regalia making, drumming, singing, and more. Respected elders such as Chief Mark “Quiet Hawk” Gould, Co-Chief Lewis “Grey Squirrel”, Sonny Pierce, Lorraine “Rainbow Walker” Gregg, Urie Ridgeway, Will Mosley Sr, and many more, have all passed down the skills needed to perform these arts from generation to generation.
We believe that connecting the arts and community is vital. Ty works with surrounding communities to educate them on Native American culture, and by doing so, also reduces stereotypes and ignorance. As the recipient of the New Jersey Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant, Ty has learned the skill of creating Pow-Wow drums and Water Drums. Passionate about education, he now teaches the tribal youth this art, as many have done before him.
