New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) | Activation, Revitalization, And Transformation (A.R.T.) Program - Phase II | A.R.T. – Phase II is a competitive grant program that will disburse $15,000,000 in ARP SLFRF funding to address the impact of COVID-19 in 31 selected municipalities throughout the state. The program supports creating public space activation initiatives, such as place-making projects, public art installations, and arts-based projects. The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey (AAHMSNJ) | Miss Black America | AAHMSNJ will host new exhibit entitled “Miss Black America” in Atlantic City, the place the pageant was first held in 1968. The exhibit will feature repurposed artwork by late Philadelphia artist Robert R. Jackson. The mixed media collection will be on display from August 1 to September 29, 2024 at the Noyes Art Garage of Stockton University (2200 Fairmount Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ 08401). Join us for the opening reception Saturday, August 10th from 2 to 5 pm at the Noyes Arts Garage.
Hispanic Association of Atlantic County | Save The Date: Atlantic City Latino Festival | TICKET NOT REQUIRED (but please rsvp). We are happy to announce that international performer and award winning merengue group Oro Solido will be headlining the 2024 Atlantic City Latino Festival. This community event is hosted by the Hispanic Association Of Atlantic County (HAAC) with the sponsorship of CRDA, the City of Atlantic City and in collaboration with Organization Azteca, NJDCA and the Atlantic City Initatives Office. Oro Solido will join a lineup of diverse Hispanic entertainment, including Mariachi, Salsa, Cumbia and Folkloric dance groups. The festive family event includes a children’s entertainment area, authentic Hispanic food and vendors. New Jersey Historical Commission | Imperfectly Civil: History of Politics and Civics in New Jersey | Join the NJHC and the Eagleton Institute of Politics on Tuesday, December 3rd, at Rutgers – New Brunswick for the 2024 New Jersey History Conference! This year’s theme – Imperfectly Civil: History of Politics and Civics in New Jersey – will examine how New Jerseyans have historically engaged with civic life through elections, public debates, activism, and beyond in addition to exploring how we can support democracy today. We are currently accepting proposals for full panel sessions, individual presentations, and lightning session presentations. Stockton University | The Holocaust Survivors of South Jersey Project Lecture | The Wally and Lutz Hammerschlag Chair in the Holocaust & Genocide Studies program will host a free lecture on in the Campus Center Meeting Room 5, centered on the more than 1,800 Holocaust survivors who fled to South Jersey and rebuilt their lives as chicken farmers. Michael Hayse, professor of Historical Studies and director of the Holocaust Survivors of South Jersey Project, will examine how the arrival of these refugees from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s impacted the local Jewish communities and the social/economic life of the region. The stories gathered by numerous Holocaust survivor families will illustrate the diverse challenges faced by these immigrants, in addition to their resilience and contributions to South Jersey. Rutgers Camden | Alonzo Adams Exhibition | The Stedman Gallery at Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Alonzo Adams, a contemporary realist figurative painter who tells stories of the Black experience. Born in 1961 and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, Alonzo Adams is a Rutgers University alumni, earning a BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts in 1984. New Jersey Historical Commission | Black Heritage Trail | The New Jersey Black Heritage Trail was signed into law by Governor Murphy on September 7, 2022. The legislation calls for the New Jersey Historical Commission (NJHC) to establish a Black Heritage Trail “to promote awareness and appreciation of Black history, heritage, and culture” that will “highlight Black heritage sites through historical markers and a trail-like path that connects the stories of Black life and resiliency.” Under this program, the Historical Commission will work in cooperation with other state agencies, such as the Historic Preservation Office, the Division of Travel and Tourism, as well as local governments, owners or operators of Black heritage sites, and others to identify a series of sites. The bill also names the New Jersey Black Cultural and Heritage Initiative Foundation as a principal collaborator, due to its mission which includes broadening, deepening, and diversifying statewide participation in and appreciation for Black arts, history, and culture.
