Capturing the Past: Wendel White’s “Folding Time at Rowan University Art Gallery
The Rowan University Art Gallery presentsFolding Time, a stunning solo exhibition by distinguished photographer Wendel White, running from September 3 through October 26, 2024. The exhibit features powerful photographs from three of White’s most significant projects: Schools for the Colored, Red Summer, and Manifest. Each body of work delves deep into the complexities of Black history in America, exploring the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the ongoing importance of elevating Black perspectives in contemporary society.
White’s photography captures more than just images; it preserves history, invites reflection, and bridges the past with the present. His work emphasizes the role photography plays in remembering and redefining forgotten narratives, prompting viewers to engage with history in a personal and meaningful way.
In Schools for the Colored, White focuses on the architecture of former segregated schools, offering a haunting look at physical spaces that once reinforced racial inequality but now serve as monuments to endurance. Red Summer draws attention to the wave of racial violence that swept through the United States in 1919, presenting powerful images that bring the echoes of these tragic events to light. Manifest intertwines the personal with the political, centering African American artifacts that redefine historical moments from the lens of resistance and identity.
Critically praised for its thoughtful representation of Black history, the exhibit was featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer and Rowan Today, underscoring how White’s work folds time, bringing the past into sharp focus for contemporary audiences. As part of Rowan University's yearlong celebration of African American art, Folding Time represents an unmissable opportunity to reflect on the intersections of history, art, and identity.
White’s photographs invite viewers to consider how history continues to shape the present. His meticulous attention to detail and composition not only document but challenge traditional narratives, transforming ordinary objects and spaces into symbols of resistance, resilience, and remembrance.
On a recent visit to the gallery, SJCA's Membership and Program Manager was captivated by the striking and evocative nature of White’s work. For those interested in further exploring White’s work, the artist will host a lecture on Saturday, October 5th, at 3:30 PM, where attendees can gain deeper insights into the inspiration and meaning behind Folding Time.
