Advocacy Update
The nonprofit sector is once again navigating turbulent waters. Between a looming federal government shutdown, new federal directives that cast a troubling shadow over nonprofit advocacy, and critical voter engagement deadlines, there’s a lot at stake for South Jersey’s arts, history, and cultural organizations.
At SJCA, we believe it’s essential to keep our community informed, connected, and prepared. Here’s what you need to know right now.
Federal Government Shutdown Looms
Congress faces a September 30 deadline to reach a deal. If no agreement is made, a shutdown could begin October 1.
- Funding interruptions: Federal grants and reimbursements may be delayed.
- Program delays: Shutdowns ripple outward, impacting contracts and community programs.
- Preparation resources: National Council of Nonprofits guidance is available for organizations planning ahead.
For many of our members already operating on razor-thin margins, even short delays could jeopardize staff, programming, and public access.
New Federal Directives Target Nonprofits
Recent actions from the White House have escalated concerns for nonprofits of all sizes:
- A new executive order and memorandum broadly link nonprofit advocacy and charitable activity with “domestic terrorism” and political violence.
- These directives could open the door for the IRS to strip tax exemptions on ideological grounds.
- Investigations into large foundations have already escalated—smaller nonprofits could easily be swept in.
This is not just about compliance—it strikes at the core of free speech and advocacy protections. Arts and history organizations are not political actors, but our ability to speak up for our communities is at risk.
Voter Registration Reminder
New Jersey’s voter registration deadline is October 14, 2025.
- Voters will elect a new Governor, the full State Assembly, and countless local offices.
- Every nonprofit can help by reminding communities to register and vote—always in a strictly nonpartisan way.

Why This Matters for South Jersey’s Arts & History Sector
Nonprofits are more than service providers—we are community lifelines, educators, storytellers, and guardians of culture. These threats remind us that:
- Our financial stability is tied directly to government actions.
- Our voices must remain strong in defending arts and history’s role in civic life.
- Solidarity matters: when we act together, we are harder to silence.
