Center for Community Arts (CCA) has a multi-faceted mission. It is committed to celebrating our world’s diversity and nurturing creativity and community through arts and humanities programs that reach out to underserved populations. The Community History Program is dedicated to discovering, preserving and presenting the African American history of Cape May County. The organization is also dedicated to restoring the Franklin Street School, a New Jersey African American Historic Site. The School was built in 1928 as a segregated elementary school for Cape May’s African American children. When restoration is complete, the School will serve as a focal point for CCA’s African American Heritage Tourism Initiative, including tours, exhibits, radio programs, a gift shop and living history presentations. CCA’s programs serve year-round residents of Cape May County and its many seasonal residents and visitors.
Cultural Education at the Center
CCA’s Arts Program began in 1996 to serve youth in grades 5 through 8. That Youth Arts Program (YAP) is now but one element of a larger program that offers arts instruction for ages 6 and up. The coming year’s roster of activities remains unchanged from 2007 and is outlined here, grouped by age of participants:
Art Programs are not Core Curriculum Based.
